SFF to partner with the Disposable Film Festival (DFF)

SFF will screen the following 5 shorts, courtesy of DFF:

The lost tribes of NYC
Wood smoke
Sour
Death the dialogue
After the rain

About DFF:

Selected by MovieMaker Magazine as one the countryʼs “coolest film festivals,” the DFF was created in 2007 to celebrate the artistic potential of disposable video: short films made on non-professional devices such as one-time use video cameras, cell phones, point and shoot cameras, webcams, computer screen capture software, and other readily available video capture devices. With people everywhere posting videos online, we felt the time was right to draw attention to the creative potential of this new mode of filmmaking. Far beyond its initial roles for videoblogging and documentation, the DFF offers a forum to display how disposable media can be used for creative purposes.

The DFF hosts screenings in Paris, London, Brussels, New York, most recently Beijing, and other cities worldwide. For more information, please visit www.disposablefilmfest.com

SFF goes mobile – film nights at Samui hot spots

SFF is stoked to collaborate with two of Samui’s most exclusive venues on a new concept of taking indie films mobile. Rare films centering around the themes of food and wine, from feature length film to documentary in good old SFF fashion, will be on display between Friday August 6 and Sunday August 8 at the classy Italian restaurant Brio (www.briosamui.com), located in the Samui Town Centre near Bophut, and X2, one of Samui’s few design hotels (www.x2resorts.com). Combining fine dining in a casual yet elegant atmosphere we invite you to begin your festival night with a dinner in either of these places. For the detailed program please see www.samuifilmfestival.com/films.html.

Beach Republic to throw a “Samui Film Festival Opening Party”

Pleased to announce that the glamorous Beach Republic (http://www.beachrepublic.com), just down the road from our main screening venue at Tamarind Springs Forest Spa (http://www.tamarindsprings.com), will host the official opening party of this summer’s SFF. Mark your calendars – Thursday 5 August 2010, 18.30 onwards. Details (films, DJs, VJs) to be announced as we get closer…

2010 Festival Sponsors & Partners – March Summary

While SFF continues to seek more support, most notably a main sponsor for its 2nd annual edition, a couple of businesses have already committed to associating themselves with this unique cultural event. Namely, these are:

- Amsiam Travel Co Ltd.
- Samui Aksorn Printing
- Lomprayah Catamaran
- Absolute Sanctuary
- Rocky’s
- Miskawaan
- Yoga Thailand

Please note that ALL of them have been supporters last year already – a sure indicator that we must have done something good…

“Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love” to have its Thai premiere at SFF

Stoked to announce that “Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love” will screen at SFF.

The film follows Youssou Ndour – the highest selling African musical artist of all time -  as he releases a deeply personal and religious album called “Egypt” in the hope of promoting a tolerant face of Islam. Almost instantly, his fellow Senegalese reject the album, and denounce his actions as blasphemous. The film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival and has won multiple awards worldwide.

“Youssou Ndour: I Bring What I Love” is a music-infused cinematic journey about the power of one man’s voice to inspire change.

Live Music also on Sunday

Samui-based artists and musicians Nartana Holzweiler, Asambai, and Roland from FLOW will join forces and perform “Music for Films” on Sunday evening, prior to the first screening. If intrigued, please arrive at 18.00 to hear the concert. We kick off with that night’s first film, Global Focus V, at 19.00.

Bossa Nova and Brazilian Jazz at the SFF on Friday and Saturday evenings

Gilbert Medam

We are stoked to announce that Gilbert Medam will jam at the SFF:

Born into a family of artists, Gilbert Medam – while an equally talented painter, photographer, and teacher – is best known as a guitarist and composer who plays bossa nova and Brazilian jazz as well as his own compositions and improvisations.

During the ’70s Gilbert made his home in Rio de Janeiro, where he met many great musicians (Toninho Horta, Baden Powell, Dori Caymmi, Hermeto Pascoal, to name a few), playing and recording with some of them, and absorbing deeply the essence of their music. A decade later he found himself studying with masters of Indian classical music in Chennai and Varanasi.

Five years ago, Gilbert was invited to play his guitar at a private party for HRH the Crown Prince and HRH the Royal Princess of Thailand.

His love for Thailand has for the last four years kept him on Koh Samui, where he lives a simple life..

To get a taste, please listen to:

SFF to partner with HUMTOO

HUMTOO is a (free) online community connecting content creators and music makers across the globe. HUMTOO operates a project marketplace for projects in search of music, as well as a user generated production music library.

HUMTOO is also running HUMFEST – a new project development initiative for the best short film uploaded on HUMTOO in search of music, and also for the best music pitched for that short film.

HUMTOO will give AU$1000/US$650/£450/€556 to the best short film uploaded to the site as a project in search of music. HUMTOO will also give the same amount to the music maker who wins that project. This money will help you to continue making great short films and great music!
